SIKESTON -- A Charleston man faces multiple felony charges after fleeing law enforcement in Sikeston.

Jamarius Z. Fisher, 17, of Charleston is charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance, unlawful use of weapon and resisting arrest/detention/stop by fleeing and creating a substantial risk of serious injury to any person, all felonies; and the misdemeanors of possession of up to 35 grams of marijuana and second-degree property damage, according to Missouri Case.net.

About 7:27 p.m. Thursday an officer with Sikeston Department Public Safety tried to stop a vehicle that failed to stop on South Kingshighway and East Malone Avenue, and the officer pursued the vehicle, according to DPS incident reports. Another Sikeston DPS detective was close by and joined in the pursuit.

"The pursuit stayed mainly on side streets and got as fast as 60 miles per hour," said Capt. Bill Mygatt with Sikeston DPS. "At one point, as they approached Tanner Street and there was a red light, the officers backed up a bit to stay clear of any problems there."

The driver, who was later identified as Fisher, reportedly turned onto Lake Street from Main Street, got out of his vehicle and ran before eventually being detained behind a house on Heath Street.
