SIKESTON -- The city's Department of Public Works, area E-911 centers and mail carriers would all be able to handle a renamed Main Street but everyone with a Main address will have some things to do.

A proposal presented to the Sikeston City Council Monday to rename Main Street in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King would take some action by public services as well as requiring some time from business owners and residents to update their address.

"For the city, the main cost would be all the street signs," said Jon Douglass, city manager. "We talked to MoDOT about that and they estimated the cost would be about $7,000 to $8,000. That's including labor."

Signs at each of the traffic signals on Main Street would have to be changed by the city as well as signs on each side of Main for the smaller intersecting streets.

"There would have to be some changes in the 911 system, but the contract with our vendor covers that," Douglass said.

Both Scott County and New Madrid County E-911 systems would have to be updated as well.

Address changes within Sikeston are provided to the two counties by Collin Cecil, Sikeston's code enforcement supervisor.

Cecil said providing address updates to the counties is a task that usually doesn't take much time out of his work week.
