SIKESTON -- Know how much sleep you are getting?

Since opening it's sleep lab in 1999, Missouri Delta Medical Center has joined the National Sleep Foundation in observing Sleep Awareness Week to remind people of the benefits of sleep as well as how important sleep is to safety and productivity.

"We've kind of become this nation of people that are running on empty," said Gina Elfrink, director of the Sleep Institute at MDMC. "Over time, sleep deprivation can cause serious issues. A lot of people don't realize the severe effects it has on your body."

The effects of sleep deprivation can range from irritability, cognitive impairment and memory issues to increased risks of obesity and even type 2 diabetes, among many others, according to Elfrink -- but you don't have to live that way and talking to your physician is the first step.

"This is something we see so much," she said. "We are very passionate about helping someone change their quality of life. We can help you sleep better -- that's our job."
