COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Getting a lead during its first trip to the MSHSAA Show Me-Showdown was hardly a problem for the Gideon boys basketball team.

It was the holding part that was giving the Bulldogs trouble.

A day after allowing Walnut Grove to battle back from nine separate deficits -- including four in the fourth quarter of a frustrating Class 1 semifinal overtime loss -- Gideon appeared to be locked in another back-and-forth tussle last night at Mizzou Arena.

But after swapping the lead with Glasgow eight times during the first five minutes of their third-place game, the Bulldogs grabbed the advantage for good and put the pedal to the floor in the second quarter to pull away for a 71-51 victory.

"We came out and jumped on them and continued to attack," Gideon Coach Keenan Buchanan said. "That's what you have to do."

The Bulldogs (26-5) stomped all over Glasgow (26-4) during a second-quarter surge that saw a slim 17-14 edge explode into a 39-18 halftime gap.

"Shots were falling. Everything was clicking," senior guard Dylan Pickard said. "We really like to keep the ball moving, and that was successful for us. We also attacked the basket real well."

A Pickard 3-pointer capped a string of nine straight points by Gideon to open the second quarter. When Glasgow's Adam Monnig snapped the run with a basket at the 4:30 mark, the Bulldogs scored the next eight points to build a 35-16 lead.

Despite Glasgow possessing an imposing paint presence in 6-foot-4 junior Kennedy Davis, the Bulldogs continually attacked the basket. If guards Pickard and Allen Earnheart weren't knifing through the Glasgow defense with dribble penetration, senior forwards Kason Lawrence and Dalen Hutchison were muscling their way for great position down low.

"We talked about that after the (semifinal) game, that we didn't attack enough," Buchanan said. "We came out tonight attacking the rim."

Lawrence scored a game-high 22 points but only had six in the decisive second quarter. While the Bulldogs got scoring from five players and shot 10 of 14 from the field in the second quarter, Glasgow got its only four points from Monnig and went 1 of 10.

"Once we saw the ball go in the hole for them a whole bunch, and the ball not going in for us, it just kind of started steamrolling," Glasgow Coach Mick Cropp said. "We generally play pretty good defense, but they have a really good point guard and a really good post player and then some guys who do a nice job with their rolls of floating around the basket and knocking down outside shots."

Hutchison scored eight of his 14 points in the first quarter, including a personal 6-0 run that erased a 10-9 deficit and put Gideon in front for good. Earnheart added 12 points and five assists, Pickard scored eight and Glenn Redden came off the bench for seven points.

"Today we were able to keep scoring and not have a lot of drop off," Huchinson said.

Gideon did appear to lose a bit of its edge in the third quarter. Monnig scored nine of his team-high 19 points to get Glasgow within 15 points on three separate occasions.

Tired of watching his squad trudge along while holding a 47-32 lead, Buchanan called a timeout with 2:29 left in the quarter in attempt to snap the Bulldogs out of their lull.

"We quit attacking," Buchanan said. "We started passing the ball around and took a couple quick shots and kind of quit playing our game there."

The Bulldogs responded by scoring on their final three possessions of the quarter. Hutchison scored underneath off a pass from Earnheart and Redden dropped in two jumpers -- including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to extend the lead to 54-34.

"It always makes a coach look good when they do the things you want them to do," Buchanan said.

The Bulldogs did their long-time coach proud by finishing with a strong fourth quarter. Buchanan emptied his bench with 1:21 remaining, allowing subs Chris Dye and Tyler Hill an opportunity to both crack the score sheet with 3-pointers.

Five of Gideon's six seniors scored, offering an acceptable sendoff following Thursday's sour defeat.

"It's so sad. I hate that it's over," Hutchison said. "I've been playing since the fifth grade and been playing with the same guys and had a lot of good memories with them. It's crazy that it's all coming to an end. There's only one better way to finish, so I guess we should be pretty happy and thank God for what we have."
