SIKESTON -- As the temperatures rise, so does the urge of many to swim and be around the water. But for those who can't swim, getting near the water can be a scary proposition, one the YMCA of Southeast Missouri wants to change.

"Swimming is a fun and enjoyable activity for children and adults alike, and it's an easy way to stay physically active and improve strength, flexibility and stamina," said Brandy Mason, member and program experience director at the YMCA. "The Y encourages all children and adults to learn how to swim. It's never too late. Basic swimming skills and safety practices save lives every day."

As a leading non-profit committed to strengthening the community through youth development and healthy living, the YMCA is a leader in providing swim lessons and water safety. They are currently offering many swim programs that can help participants learn new techniques and increase physical activity while meeting new friends, gaining confidence and learn safety skills that can save lives.

A youth group from Charleston is one of the many to take advantage of the YMCA's swimming programs. After working out transportation and funding, the group comes to the YMCA and takes swimming lessons, which for some can be a frightening experience.
