Annual Community Clean-Up Campaign is opportunity to do some spring cleaning
SIKESTON -- Now just might be the perfect time for a little spring cleaning.
The annual Community Clean-Up Campaign begins Saturday and will continue through May 1.
From 7:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. for nine days, Sikeston residents can bring rubbish, bulky items and yard waste to the compost site on Compress Road and dispose of them.
According to Darren Martin, Sikeston street superintendent, the city has set aside two dozen 30-yard dumpsters for the Community Clean-Up Campaign and he expects them all to be filled over the next week and a half.
"This is something we provide as a service to residents once a year," Martin said. "It is a really good program. We take a lot of stuff and it helps get rid of eyesores."
There are a few rules for those wanting to dispose of items and Martin said there will be staff at the site who will enforce the rules. All those coming in to leave items will be asked to show proof of residency.
Martin explained there are certain things by law they are not able to accept. This includes any hazardous materials, chemicals, asbestos materials, shingles, paint, LP tanks, fuel containers, construction waste, demolition waste and batteries. The site will not accept grass clippings or tires larger than 16-inches without rims.
