CHARLESTON, Mo - Three people were shot in what law enforcement are describing as a gang-related activity.

At 11:20 a.m. Tuesday, Charleston Department of Public Safety Director Robert Hearnes reported his agency began receiving 911 calls of a shooting near the intersection of Vine and Oliver streets.

"Responding officers found at least two areas where multiple shots were fired, and several vehicles and residences that had been damaged by gunfire," Hearnes said.

A description of a vehicle involved was obtained and broadcast to area agencies. A short time later, the vehicle was located by officers with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety, who were able to secure the vehicle.

Sikeston DPS also assisted Charleston officers as victims began arriving at Missouri Delta Medical Center, Hearnes said in a news release.

Members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol assisted with the investigation in Charleston, where a second vehicle believed to be involved in the shooting was located.

"So far, the investigation has revealed that three people were shot, and four residences and three vehicles were damaged by gunfire," Hearnes reported. "Of the gunshot victims, none of the injuries are life threatening."

According to Hearnes, thus far one person is in custody in connection with the shootings.

Hernandez M. Evans, 24, of Charleston is currently being held in the Mississippi County Jail on charges of first degree assault, armed criminal action and felonious gang activity. He has a cash-only bond of $500,000.

Hearnes said more arrests are expected as the investigation continues.

The Charleston DPS Director expressed his appreciation for the quick assistance and cooperation in this investigation from the Sikeston Department of Public Safety and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

"The investigation was much more efficient with the three departments working together," he said.
