Parades, pageants, talent show apart of the annual soybean festival

Blast from the Past From our files in 1965 - The Second Place float of the New Madrid County Library in the Grand Parade of the annual Soybean Festival.

With what is being planned for this year's 69th Annual National Soybean Festival, there will be something for the entire family. "Down on the Farm" is the theme for this year's 69th Annual National Soybean Festival. It's time to get working on those floats!

The festival begins Saturday, September 24 with Main Street Madness through Thursday night, September 29.

On Saturday is Main Street Madness with a 5K run/walk sponsored by SRG Global beginning with a 7:30 AM registration.

Soybean Shuffle-

Race entry fee before September 9 is $20 and includes a t-short. Registration forms are available at SRG global, 101 Meatte Avenue, or al any local business displaying a Soybean Shuffle sign. Signed registration forms are required for each participant. Race entry fee after September 9 and through the day of the race is $25. T-shirts will be provided on a first-come, first serve basis. Registration and sign-in begins at 7:30 AM and race starts at 8:00 AM

All proceeds from the race will be donated to local Portageville pantry food and toy drives.

Additionally, there will be a Kid's Fun run on Saturday, September 24. Bring your kids ages 12 and under to the Main Street Madness Stage at 12 noon to participate in their very own fun run. Pre-registration or sign up the day of the race. Entry fee is $5.00 per child. T-shirts also provided to those that pre-register. First, Second and Third place winners will be recognized.

The Miss Soybean Queen contest-

At 10:00am, the 69th Annual National Soybean Pageants, sponsored by the Portageville Chamber of Commerce, will take place on the Grand Stage. Girls from all over the Missouri Bootheel are welcome to participate in the annual pageant.

Young boys and girls ages 6-8 can compete in the Little Mr. and Miss Soybean pageant.

Girls ages 9-19 may compete in the other aged categories. Young Jr. Miss Soybean, ages 9-12; Junior Miss Soybean, ages 13-15; and Miss Soybean, ages 16-19. Pageant fees for all ages is $30 if registered by September 17th. Prices will increase to $35 on the day of the pageant.

All contestants must arrive no later than 9:30 a.m. at Southern Elegance Flowers behind the stage on Main Street to receive number and register.

First Annual Talent show-

Many have watched "America's Got Talent". Now there will be a "Soybean Festival Talent show". This new event, sponsored by the Portageville Chamber of Commerce, will take place on Monday night at the stage.

"This will be the first year to have such an event built into the annual Soybean Festival week, according to Joy Partin, event committee member. "We have never had anything on Monday night, and thought this would be a good ting to do."

Be apart of the 69th Annual National Soybean Festival and participate in the new talent show! It is open to all ages and will be held on Main Street Monday, September 26 from 6:30 to 8:80 p.m. There will be prizes for First, Second and Third Places and food vendors will be available.

The organizers are looking for Singers, Impersonators, Instrumentalists, Comedians, Dancers, Ventriloquists, and Jugglers! What is your talent?

There is no entry fee and you can pick up registration forms at Heartland Tax or New Madrid County Library located in down town Portageville.

You are asked to bring your own music, instruments and props.

Parade Prize Money increases-

This year, the Kiddie Parade will be on Tuesday, September 27. There are three age categories, 0-3, 4-7, and 8-12. Contestants can compete in the following categories: Walking Characters, Bikes and Trikes, Wagons, Motorized and Mini and Maxi Floats.

The motorized category includes all battery-powered, self- contained vehicles. Mini Floats are trailers only. Maxi Floats are trailers with a decorated pulling implement. Absolutely no automobiles / trucks will be allowed in the parade, you must pull a float with a four-wheeler, golf cart, lawn mower, etc.

Prizes are:

Mini Float

1st Place: $125

2nd Place: $100

3rd Place: $75

Maxi Float

1st Place: $200

2nd Place: $150

3rd Place: $125

The Grand Float Parade will be on Thursday, September 29.

A Community Church Service, sponsored by the Ministerial Alliance, will be held on Wednesday, September 28 at 7:00pm on the Main Street Stage. Bring your lawn chairs.

If this not enough fun for you and the kids, there will be a carnival here beginning Thursday, Sept. 29 through Saturday, Oct. 1.

Portageville High School will celebrate their Homecoming Football game against Scott City beginning at 7:00 pm on Friday, September 23. Come out and support the Bulldogs!
