Portageville girls earn Second in BHC basketball tournaments
There was a lot of action in the Malden High School gymnasium during the Bootheel Conference Tournament which began on Saturday, January 28 and continuing through Friday, February 3. When the dust settled, the Hayti Indians had claimed the junior varsity boys’ tournament championship; the Malden Green Wave had earned the girls’ varsity title; and the Caruthersville Tigers had written their name on the boys’ varsity final.
In the junior varsity championship game, the Caaruthersville Tigers faced the Hayti Indians with the Indians taking the 59-56 win, and the title.
Hayti’s Chrivonte Moore drilled three treys and three deuces for 15 points. Ivory Winters added 14 points on five twos and four aces. Xavier Jammerson put up five two-point field goals and a bonus shot for 11.
Nick Moore led the charge for the Tigers with eight twos and seven from the bonus stripe for 23 points. Rakeed Maxwell put up four from inside the arc for eight points. Dalton Privett added six points earned on two twos.
In the girl's championship, Malden's Lana Reed exploded for 23 points on seven twos, a three, and six bonus points to lead the hometown Green Wave to the varsity girls’ conference championship, which went nicely with their regular season title. Tebrya Benford put in seven twos for 14 points. Desiree Perkins hit a pair each of threes and twos and three bonus shots for 13.
The ‘Dogs’ Deondra Johnson drained eight twos and a free throw for 17 points. Adrienne Duncan put in four twos and a bonus shot for nine points. Dasmine Johnson linked a trey, two deuces, and an ace for eight points.
Finally in the varsity boys’ championship, the play was intense, but, in the end, it was the Caruthersville Tigers taking the 61-54 win over the Hayti Indians.
Caruthersville's Deandre Davis tapped ten twos and a free throw to lead the Tigers with 21 points. George Qualls put up a trey, six deuces, and an ace for 16 points. Tallon Fonda drained three from outside and four from inside the arc for 14 points.
The Indians’ Darius Jones tallied 17 points on six two-pointers and five singles. Maurice Farr, Kemron Rollings, and Dayon Moore contributed eight points apiece, and Maurius Newbill hit one of each for six points.
The Lady Bulldogs (12-9) will travel to Sikeston on Monday, February 13, and then next Thursday, February 13 for their last home game with East Priairie.
