PORTAGEVILLE, Mo. - Two people are facing charges after a Portageville man was injured in an assault.

Tony L. Portwood, 37, and Brittany E. Cates, 28, of Doniphan are each charged with first degree assault and armed criminal action in connection with a disturbance reported around 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

According to the probable cause statement filed by Portageville Police Sgt. Daniel E. Johnson, he was dispatched to a residence in the 300 block of 11th Street.

On his arrival, Johnson said he observed Jacob Cook sitting on the porch bleeding from the left side of his head. The officer reported Cook also had a laceration and contusions to the left side of his head.

Cook identified his attacker as Portwood and said a woman had knocked on his door stating she had car trouble. While he was outside looking at the vehicle, Cook said a man came running from behind his house and hit him on the head, the officer wrote in the probable cause statement.

The victim was able to describe the female, later identified as Cates, and also the car the pair left in.

The officer noted a video was obtained which showed Portwood walking to Cook's residence then disappearing behind the rear of the house. The video also shows Portwood coming from behind the residence and striking Cook.

"The assault then moves to the front yard and video shows Cook on the ground as Portwood stands over Cook and tries to strike Cook with an object in his right hand. Both Portwood and the female leave the scene in a Pontiac passenger car," Johnson reported.

Following the assault Cook was taken by ambulance to the Pemiscot Memorial Hospital for treatment.

In a statement for police, Cook wrote that Portwood told him, "I'm going to kill you for hitting my daughter."

Warrants were issued for Portwood and Cates on Sunday. Bond for each is set at $50,000 with the condition neither have no contact with the victim.

As of Tuesday, Portwood remained in custody in the Pemiscot County Jail, according to the New Madrid County Sheriff's Department.
