Suspect in custody after deadly Caruthersville shooting

Wednesday, February 15, 2017

One suspect is in custody after a weekend shooting at a Caruthersville nightclub that left one person dead and six others injured.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the shooting happened Sunday in the parking lot of Club Envy at around 3:50 a.m. Six of the victims suffered gunshot wounds, while another person was injured by a window during the altercation.

MSHP Sgt. Clark Parrott says a suspect is now in custody, and officials are in the process of filing formal charges. The names of the suspect and the victims have not been released.

The victim killed during the shooting was pronounced dead Sunday at around 11 a.m. at a local hospital. An initial investigation showed 5 people shot and one other injured, but officers later learned of a sixth gunshot victim, bringing the total victims to seven. All victims were taken to local hospitals for treatment.

Parrott says the initial investigation shows those involved in the shooting may have known each other. He added the shooting does not appear to have been an active shooter-type situation like some recent high-profile mass shootings.

Parrott says the case is being handled by roughly 40 officers from multiple agencies, including the Caruthersville Police Department, the Pemiscot County Sheriff’s Office, the Hayti Police Department and MSHP.

Officers, deputies and troopers are still investigating the shooting. On Monday, Parrott noted that officers were having trouble getting some witnesses to cooperate with the investigation.

Troopers say that anyone with information on the shooting can contact the Caruthersville Police Department at (573) 333-2121, the Pemiscot County Sheriff’s Office at (573) 333-4101, or the Missouri State Highway Patrol at (573) 840-9500.
