Two jailed on drug charges in Mississippi County
CHARLESTON, Mo. - Following up on active warrants led to the arrest of two East Prairie residents on additional charges.
The Mississippi County Sheriff's Department reported the arrest of Dewayne Kent Davis Jr., 27, and Kevin Wayne Jones, 36. Both are charged with felony possession of a controlled substance.
According to Mississippi County Sheriff Cory Hutcheson, Davis' arrest stems from an encounter early Saturday morning between deputies and Davis, whom deputies knew to have an active warrant. After Deputy Britton Ferrell placed Davis under arrest for failure to appear on a charge of driving while revoked, Ferrell and Jail Administrator Sally Gammons found Davis was in possession of several prescription pain pills for which he did not have a prescription.
Davis was then transported to the Mississippi County Detention Center.
A short time later, Ferrell and Gammons observed Kevin Jones in a vehicle traveling through East Prairie. Because the officers knew Jones had an active parole warrant, Ferrell conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and placed Jones under arrest on that warrant.
A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of methamphetamine concealed within Jones' seat. Jones was also transported to the Mississippi County Detention Center.
In addition to the charge of possession of a controlled substance, Jones is charged with felony nonsupport and resisting arrest. The resisting arrest charge stems from an earlier incident in which Jones reportedly fled as deputies attempted to apprehend him on the parole warrant, Hutcheson reported.
Bond for the drug possession charge is set at $5,000, but due to the parole warrant, Jones is being held without bond.
The bond for Davis on the felony possession of a controlled substance charge is set at $5,000.
As of press time, both men remain in the Mississippi County Detention Center.
