Man jailed for chasing woman down street with sword

SIKESTON -- A Sikeston man faces felony charges after allegedly threatening a woman with a sword.

Michael Edward Cox, 54, is charged with felony third-degree domestic assault, misdemeanor fourth-degree domestic assault, felony unlawful use of a weapon and felony resisting/interfering with the arrest for a felony, according to online court records.

At 2:51 p.m. Saturday, officers with Sikeston Department of Public Safety responded to the 800 block of William Street in reference to disturbance with a weapon, according to DPS reports.

Upon their arrival, officers reportedly made contact with the complainant who was located down the street and said she came to the residence to retrieve her clothes because she was no longer staying there. She said Cox tried to hit her at the front door while she was going in the house, and she went inside anyway to get her clothes. The complainant said Cox told her to leave so she called a cab and was going to wait there. At some point, Cox allegedly told the woman: "I'm gonna cut yo head off" and left to get a sword. According to the complainant, Cox tried to stab her with the sword and chased her down the down the street. She said she called the police once he stopped chasing her.

Cox was located and taken into custody. Bond is set at $5,000 cash only, and as of Tuesday, he remained in the Scott County Jail.
