CARUTHERSVILLE, Mo. — A Deering man faces charges following a shooting that injured another man Sunday in Pemiscot County.
Joseph O. Mooney, 17, is charged with first degree assault, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a firearm.
According to Pemiscot County Sheriff Tommy Greenwell, the shooting occurred at 39 Second St. in Deering. Pemiscot County 911 received a call of an accidental shooting at 12:39 p.m. Sunday. Deputies arrived on the scene at 12:51 p.m. and discovered a 16-year-old male had been shot in the head by a 17 year-old-male who was later identified as Mooney.
The victim was flown from the scene by helicopter to LeBouner Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., then transferred to the MED in Memphis.
“Initial investigation indicated the victim and the suspect knew each other,” the sheriff said. “The suspect stated he was only trying to scare the victim and did not think the gun was loaded when he pulled the trigger.”
