SIKESTON -- Nationally renowned surgeon Warren H. Cole had been a friend and mentor to Sikeston surgeon Loring Helfrich, but the medical doctors shared another passion which led Cole to visit Sikeston in August 1977.
Like Helfrich, Cole was an avid hunter, and he was anxious to dove hunt in the area where the season was rumored to be bountiful.
"Dr. Cole wanted to hunt on opening day which is Sept. 1, but he wanted to use the previous night for a medical lecture," said Helfrich.
Cole passed away in 1990, but his inspiration to combine advancing medicine with his avocation of hunting endures.
Since 1977, Helfrich has continued to honor his mentor with the Warren H. Cole Surgical Lecture. The dinner and lecture are held each year on the eve of opening day of dove season.
Over the years, medical professionals in the area have heard expert lectures on an immense range of subjects from detailed advances in cancer treatments to the treatment of snake bites, just to name a few.
"We are honored this year to have Julie A. Margenthaler, M.D., professor of surgery at the Washington University School of Medicine, as our guest and lecturer," said Helfrich.
On Aug. 31 Margenthaler presented updates in auxillary staging for breast cancer to a packed house of medical professionals at Missouri Delta Medical Center.
Helfrich said he was pleased with the medical presentation, and looks forward to continuing the tradition.
