Fellowship Baptist Church planning Mens Conference
SIKESTON - Jesus called upon his disciples to come be fishers of men. At the Fellowship Baptist Church Men's Conference May 6, a fisherman will call upon his listeners to become better spiritual leaders through Jesus.
Clay Dyer, a professional sport bass fisherman, will be the guest speaker at the conference, which begins at 10 a.m. May 6 at the Fellowship Baptist Church,1801 Ables Road.
Dyer was born without any lower limbs, no arm on the left side and a partial arm on the right. However, he has not allowed his disabilities to keep him from his goals and uses his life to inspire others, said Corey Houston, one of the organizers of the inaugural Fellowship Baptist Men's Conference.
According to Houston, Dyer's motto is "if I can, you can. He talks about overcoming whatever obstacles you may have in your life. He makes a really good testimony that through God and Jesus Christ you can be anything.
"If you have a son, dad, granddad, friend, uncle, brother, or any man of any age, you need to come and be inspired by his testimony," he continued. "It's not about fishing. It's a conference about becoming a better man through this inspirational story."
The conference will begin with a short song service followed by an approximately 30 minute presentation by Dyer. Following a break for a barbecue lunch, Dyer will speak again. The conference will wrap up at approximately 1 p.m.
Throughout the day there will be drawings for door prizes, such as fishing gear and tools.
The conference is designed to be fun as well as uplifting, House said.
"We want to light a fire under the men to become leaders in the community, especially spiritually," he explained. "We believe that kind of leadership begins with the men and filters down to the wives and children."
Seating is limited. Houston noted tickets are going quickly but are still available.
Tickets are $12 and include the barbecue lunch. Tickets are available at the church; Kingsway Furniture, 950 S. Kingshighway; Inside Story in downtown Sikeston; or online at www.iTickets.com (search for Clay Dyer to find the page to order tickets).
