PUXICO, Mo. -- Vernon Abernathy, 88, died Feb. 21, 2018, at his home near Puxico.

Born May 10, 1929, in Advance, son of the late Edward and Myrtle Boyd Abernathy, he had lived in St. Louis and moved to Puxico in 1966. He was a member of the Christ Gospel Church in Millersville and attended the Duck Creek Baptist Church near Puxico. He had worked for Hubert Browning Trucking and farmed most of his life.

On May 23, 1952, in Marble Hill, he married Dortha Dunning, who survives of the home.

Other survivors include: two daughters and sons-in-law, Bernadean and Miles Anselm of Poplar Bluff and Debbie and George Strombach of Puxico; two grandchildren, Ben Hancock of Puxico and Danielle Steinman of Seattle, Wash.; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Vernas Abernathy and Hubert Browning; and one sister, Lucille Walker.

Visitation is from 10 a.m. until service time at 1 p.m. Monday at the Watkins and Sons Funeral Home in Puxico with Buck Cruse of Puxico officiating.

Burial with full military honors will be in the Missouri Veteran's Cemetery at Bloomfield.
