CHARLESTON, Mo. -- James Monroe Malugen, 80, died Dec. 11, 2017, in the Lutheran Hospice House in Cape Girardeau.
Born Dec. 30, 1936, in Caruthersville, son of the late Guffrie and Gertrude Malugen, he was a graduate of Potosi High School. He had worked as a driving instructor with Missouri State Highway Patrol. He then received his bachelor's degree in education from Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau. While serving in the Army, from 1960-1966, he was a communication specialist Class 4. He served two years of active duty, two years of active reserve and two years of inactive reserve. While serving in Germany, he was in charge of cryptology. After obtaining his degrees, he taught elementary school at Richwoods Elementary, K-14 Elementary and Potosi Elementary for a total of 32 years. During his years in education, he also coached girls and boys tennis for a total of 15 years. He was also a pastor at Bellview Presbyterian Church in Caldonia for 31 years, and he preached at First Christian Church in Charleston for the past 11 years.
On Jan. 10, 1965, in Charleston, he married Carol Ferrell, who survives of the home.
Other survivors include: two sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Jennifer Malugen and Jamie and Crystal Malugen; two brothers, Warren Malugen and Wayne Malugen; and six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two sisters, Joan Blair and Erma Jean; and two brothers, Johnny and Junior Malugen.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time at 1 p.m. Thursday at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston. Martin Lucas, the Rev. Gerald Penn and the Rev. J. Robert Webster, will officiate.
Burial will follow at the IOOF Cemetery in Charleston, with military graveside rites provided by the Missouri Military Honors Program.
