BERTRAND, Mo. - A man whose neck was slashed during a domestic assault is expected to make a full recovery.

The Mississippi County Sheriff's Department reported the arrest of Gregory Bain, 61, of Bertrand, on charges of first degree domestic assault and armed criminal action in connection with the incident. Bain currently is being held in the Mississippi County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bond.

According to Mississippi County Sheriff Cory Hutcheson, the investigation began Friday afternoon when Captain Barry Morgan was dispatched to a Bertrand residence in reference to a domestic disturbance in progress. While en route, Morgan learned an ambulance was also dispatched to treat a stabbing victim.

As Morgan arrived first responders were already at the scene and providing aid to a man with a laceration to his neck. The victim was later transported by ambulance to a local hospital, where he was treated and is expected to make a full recovery, Hutcheson said in a news release.

After processing the crime scene and conducting interviews with a witness and the suspect, Morgan ultimately developed probable cause to believe there was a domestic disturbance between the victim and Bain.

"According to an affidavit submitted by Captain Morgan, the men reportedly exchanged words inside the home, and then the victim went outside," Hutcheson said. "At that time, Bain allegedly confronted the victim in the back yard, and after a brief scuffle, used a knife to cut the victim's throat."

Bain is scheduled to formally arraigned on the charges at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday before Associate Judge S. Rob Barker, according to online court information.

The Sheriff's Office expressed its appreciation to the Bertrand Volunteer Fire Department for its quick response stating it likely saved the victim's life.
