ARBYRD, Mo. -- A 10-year-old died Friday as a result of an accidental gunshot.

According to the Dunklin County Sheriff's Department, at about 6:52 p.m. Friday, officers received a 911 call from a woman stating her 10-year-old son had been shot with an AR15 rifle and they were coming from the Arbyrd area en route to Twin Rivers Medical Center in Kennett, Mo.

Deputies responded to the hospital and the victim was rushed into the emergency room where he was immediately tended to by doctors and nurses.

It was learned from the parents that the father was in a bedroom and had removed a rifle from the gun safe, removed the magazine and tried to eject a round and the gun went off with the bullet grazing a part of the victim's left arm with the bullet then entering the left side of the chest and side area. The victim was lying in bed at the time of the incident.

Efforts to revive the boy were unsuccessful and the incident is under investigation by the Dunklin County Sheriff's Office and the Dunklin County Coroner.
