SIKESTON -- A Sikeston man is in custody after a shooting Monday night.

According to Sikeston Department of Public Safety Assistant Chief Jim McMillen, a 35-year-old Sikeston man walked into the emergency room of the Missouri Delta Medical Center just after 7 p.m. with a gunshot wound to his legs. A DPS officer was already at the ER on an unrelated incident and took information from the victim.

The victim said he was shot in a vehicle at the intersection of Ingram and Linn Streets.

A preliminary investigation led officers to believe the shooting occurred over a custody dispute over a 9-year-old girl. The two parties had an altercation at the intersection and left the victim with gunshot wounds to the legs. The man is expected to fully recover.

The suspect was subsequently arrested at DPS Headquarters. He is a 33-year-old Sikeston man. Officers are conducting interviews of all parties involved and charges are expected to be sought on the shooter for the assault with the weapon.
