Sikeston woman receives a national accounting award
El DORADO, Kan. -- Butler Community College student Lora Tanner won a national scholarship offered by the Teachers of Accounting at Two Year Colleges. This award is offered to outstanding students at two year colleges who are majoring in accounting. This organization only awards seven scholarships.
Tanner, 56, started at Butler spring term 2012, taking at least two classes each semester. She moved back to her hometown Sikeston, Missouri, last fall to be closer to her father and has since transitioned to being an online student.
Tanner currently works full time at Essner, Miles and Modde, a CPA firm in Southeast Missouri. After finishing at Butler next fall, she plans on transferring to either Southeast Missouri State or Southern Illinois University. She hopes to receive a Bachelor's degree in accounting and eventually become a certified public accountant.
"It has been a long road, but I'm excited to see that my grades and goals are being noticed and that this scholarship will ease my financial burden this fall," Tanner said.
The Teachers of Accounting at Two Year Colleges' objective is to advance accounting education. This organization serves as a forum for sharing innovative ideas in accounting curriculum.
New pig production
unit to open near Oran
ORAN, Mo. -- A new market opportunity for soybean farmers in Southeast Missouri will be opening in Scott County in the Delta Gilts Facility.
Area farmers, business leaders and media are invited to an open house for Delta Gilts will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 25 at the facility, which is located at 400 Pig Alley Rd in Oran.
The new pig production unit will raise replacement gilts (young females) that will go to other farms and become moms. The Pipestone System brings modern livestock and veterinary practices to the pork industry while bringing farmers together to produce a quality supply of piglets for family farmers. Pipestone is actively involved with research, leading the industry improving pork production, individual pig care and animal welfare.
Malden attorney honored for volunteering legal services
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Malden attorney Cameron Parker recently recieved the Philip S. Huffman Memorial Award, recognizing the commitment of volunteer time to legal services of Southern Missouri clients by a private attorney in its rural service area.
Parker received her law degree from Mississippi College School of Law and is with the law firm of Welch & Parker in Malden. She joined LSSM's judicare and pro bono panels in 2005 and is a true advocate for the poor and disadvantaged. Her willingness to help has ensured many low-income families a chance to be heard; an opportunity they would not have had without her. She is always willing to take cases, and clients enjoy working with her and are grateful for her work.
During her tenure of helping Legal Services clients, Parker has handled more than 130 cases for low-income people living in rural Missouri providing 1,137 hours of legal representation. She has represented low-income individuals with custody matters, divorces, minor guardianship/conservatorship, paternity, Medicaid, and bankruptcy. Parker has also been an advocate for victims of domestic and sexual violence by handling their cases and ensuring their safety.
The award was established in memory of Philip S. Huffman who served as a board member of Legal Services of Southern Missouri from 1996 until his death in 2005. Huffman was involved in the development of Legal Aid of Southwest Missouri in the mid-1970's. He practiced law in Hartville, Mo., for over 37 years, and had a strong commitment to legal services and helping low-income persons in Southern Missouri. This award was established and funded by the Roy W. Slusher Foundation.
Cameron LSSM provides free legal assistance to people living at or below poverty level. LSSM receives over 11,000 applications each year and with current resources is able to assist 2,500 clients. The service area includes the counties of: Barry, Bollinger, Butler, Cape Girardeau, Carter, Cedar, Christian, Crawford, Dade, Dallas, Dent, Douglas, Dunklin, Gasconade, Greene, Howell, Iron, Laclede, Lawrence, Madison, Maries, Mississippi, New Madrid, Oregon, Ozark, Pemiscot, Perry, Phelps, Polk, Pulaski, Reynolds, Ripley, St. Francois, Ste. Genevieve, Scott, Shannon, Stoddard, Stone, Taney, Texas, Wayne, Webster and Wright.
LSSM has offices located in Springfield, West Plains, Rolla, Charleston, and Cape Girardeau.
