SIKESTON — A Sikeston man was injured after being shot during an altercation at a convenience store over the weekend in Sikeston.
At 9:14 p.m. Saturday an officer with Sikeston Department of Public Safety was patrolling and observed a disturbance at the front door of Westside Liquor, 889 West Malone Ave., in Sikeston, according to Lt. Austin Henley with Sikeston DPS.
“The officer started approaching the scene when the fight started and he heard gunshots while he was approaching. During the investigation a male showed up at Missouri Delta Medical Center with a gunshot wound to his lower abdomen,” Henley said.
The man was flown to a Cape Girardeau hospital where, as of Monday, he was listed in serious but stable condition.
According to reports, the victim was at the convenience store when he got into a fist fight with a man who was later identified as Asa Buford, 19, of Sikeston. While the two were fighting, another male came in to the store and shot the victim.
Buford was subsequently arrested and charged with felony third-degree assault. He was also charged with first-degree burglary for previously trespassing.
Bond for Buford is set at $50,000 cash or surety and as of Tuesday, he remained in the Scott County Jail.
Then at 10:23 p.m. Saturday, officers responded to the 900 block of Ruth Street in reference to an assault/shots fired, DPS reports said.
“The complainant said she had just backed out of her driveway and started driving west on Ruth Street. A car passed her and she heard three or four gunshots. One of the shots hit the driver’s side of her vehicle,” Henley said.
There were two or three people in the vehicle, but no one was struck, Henley said.
Both incidents remain under investigation by Sikeston DPS.
