Dorothy Ledbetter
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — Dorothy Ellen Brewer Ledbetter, 90, formerly of Charleston, died at 10 p.m. July 14, 2018, at The Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau.
Born June 11, 1928, in Charleston, daughter of the late Harry T. and Erma M. Cagle Brewer, she lived most of her life in Charleston, where she was the first female police officer on the Charleston police force. After retiring from the police force, she moved to Sikeston, where she worked and retired from JC Penney Co. She was a member of the Missouri Police Officers Association, the Baptist Women's Association, The Business and Professional Club where she served as president and was named “Woman of the Year” at one of the annual banquets. She served on the board and as president of the Mississippi County District 5 Ambulance District. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Charleston, Mo.
Her husband, Joseph Eugene "Oscar" Ledbetter, preceded her in death.
She was also preceded in death by one sister.
Survivors include: her children, Jo Ellen (Ledbetter) Milner and husband Doug of Columbia; Steve Ledbetter of Sikeston and David Ledbetter of Cartersville; two sisters, Katherine Donaldson Denning and Betty True Forrest of Cape Girardeau; and six grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, two great-stepgrandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until service time at 2 p.m. Thursday at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston.
Burial will follow in the IOOF Cemetery near Charleston.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons: Andrew Francis, Stephen Ledbetter, Blake Ledbetter, Michael Ledbetter, Quinton Ledbetter and Hayden Henningsen.
