Four arrested after police respond to disturbance call in Sikeston

SIKESTON — A disturbance resulted in the arrest of four people early Sunday in Sikeston after law enforcement officers were met with resistance while responding to the call.

At 12:45 a.m. Sunday, officers with Sikeston Department of Public Safety, Missouri State Highway Patrol and Street Crimes Task Force responded to a disturbance at the Miami Arcade located at 179 Branum in Sikeston, according to Sgt. Jon Broom, public information officer for Sikeston DPS.

As officers arrived, they observed a large crowd evacuating the building and overheard reports from bystanders there may have been gunshots fired prior to their arrival, Broom said.

“Officers attempted to make entry into the arcade to check the wellbeing of the people still inside but where met with some resistance,” Broom said.

When officers made entry, they reported the odor of burned marijuana and observed a 16-year-old Sikeston juvenile in possession of the illegal drug. The officers attempted to take this juvenile into custody at which time he resisted and refused officers’ commands, according to Broom.

Officers were eventually able to take the juvenile into custody and recovered the suspected marijuana as evidence. An additional search of his person yielded a white powdery substance that field tested positive for cocaine, Broom said.

This juvenile’s guardian was contacted as well as the Scott County Juvenile Office. He was later transported to Missouri Delta Medical Center for treatment and observation do to his admitted use of the drugs found in his possession.

Officers remained at the arcade and made additional arrests for charges varying from assault on police, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and possession of marijuana.

Individuals arrested included:

— Aviance K. Mills, 24, of Sikeston on charges of assault on a police officer, disorderly conduct, possession of marijuana and resisting arrest. Bond was set at $2,000 cash

— Porscha A. Smith, 28 of Sikeston on charges of assault on a police officer, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Bond was set at $1,500 cash.

— Willondria S. Washington, 22, of Sikeston on charges of assault on a police officer, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Bond was set at $1,500 cash.

— Perry D. Ellis, 30, Sikeston on a disorderly conduct charge. Bond was set at $500 cash.

“Sikeston DPS captured this disturbance on officer-worn body cameras as well as cameras from their patrol cars,” Broom said. “City-owned security cameras located on Branum Street also captured this disturbance. Officers and detectives will continue to review camera footage from this evening and even more arrests are possible.”

Sikeston DPS was assisted by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Cape Girardeau Police Department, Miner Police Department and the Scott County Sheriff’s Office.
