Sylvester Banks
AUSTELL, Ga. — Sylvester Fredrick Banks, 54, formerly of Charleston, Mo., died July 20, 2018, at his sister’s home in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
Born Jan. 4, 1964, in Wyatt, Mo., son of the late Sylvester and Sally Reed Banks, he was of the Baptist belief and a 1982 graduate of Charleston High School. After graduation, he joined the United States Marine Corps where he lived in Camp Pendleton in San Diego, Calif. He served from June 8, 1982, to Feb. 14, 1992, and received an honorable discharge. While serving, he became a rifleman coach for over nine years and a marksmanship instructor for over five years. He also took courses in Noncommissioned Officer Leadership and Squad Leaders and was a drill sergeant. He received four Good Conduct Medals, two Sea Service Deployment Ribbons, Letter of Appreciation, two Overseas Service Ribbons, a Certificate of Commendation Combat Action Ribbon, four Meritorious Masts and four Rifle Expert Badges. He also served in Desert Storm. He had lived in many different places including, Sikeston, Mo., and Dexter, Mo. He was also employed at a number of places including JM Clipper, Nestle Purina and Trimac Transportation.
Survivors include: one son and one daughter-in-law, Marcus and Crystal Banks of Douglasville; two daughters, Delecia Dunnigan of Charleston and Sailmia Banks of Jacksonville, N.C.; one stepson, Landy "Lambo" Maddox of Chicago; four brothers, Timothy Banks of Cape Girardeau, Michael Banks of Austell, Carlos "Tony" Banks of Wyatt and Richard Douglas of West Memphis, Ark.; one sister, Yvette Nicole Robinson of Cape Girardeau; special friends, Annette Maddox of Chicago and Eddie Mae "Mickey" Washington of Wyatt; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Faith Temple Church of God in Christ in Wyatt with Elvin Greer officiating.
Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery at Charleston with the Williams Funeral Home of Charleston in charge of arrangements.
