Bullfighters Only returns to Sikeston Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo on Aug. 9 and 10
SIKESTON — Bullfighters Only will return for the third time to the Sikeston Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo. Thursday night, Aug. 9 and Friday night, Aug. 10 will each host five rounds of bullfighting. Since 2016, this rodeo event has inspired a huge following in Southeast Missouri.
“Last year was only our second time hosting Bullfighters Only, but audience members of all ages waited in line for autographs and photos with their favorite bullfighters,” said Ross Merideth, rodeo chairman. “Several kids even came dressed in full bullfighter gear. We’d be crazy not to bring BFO back again.”
BFO style bullfighting is different from traditional bull events. Those who compete perform freestyle stunts to dodge, duck and weave past charging bulls. Judges award up to 50 points to those who exhibit control, style, creativity and willingness to take risks when engaging with the bull. Judges also award up to 50 points to the bull for maintaining aggression and speed. The matches are limited to 60 seconds.
The bulls used for BFO are specially bred for certain fighting traits. Their natural instinct is to charge, making them the perfect bulls for fighters who want them to stay engaged, allowing for higher scores.
