Dr. Tom Waltrip
ELGIN, Texas — Roy Thomas “Tom” Waltrip Jr., M.D., beloved husband, father, brother, physician and friend, fell asleep in Jesus and entered into eternal glory with God in heaven on Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2018.
He was born on Nov. 22, 1929, to Roy Thomas Waltrip Sr. and Edna Mae Griggs Waltrip. He was born again into God’s Kingdom through the waters of Holy Baptism at Apostles’ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Toledo, Ohio, on March 28, 1943, and also confirmed his Christian faith there. He attended the University of Missouri, where he received a Bachelor of Arts and a Master’s in psychology. In 1957, he received his MD from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine. He was a respected family practice physician in Sikeston, Mo., for 52 years. He also did psychiatric counseling at Bootheel Counseling Center in Sikeston. In addition, he belonged to several medical organizations and running clubs. He loved spending time with his family, was an avid runner, and also enjoyed music, photography, travel and studying medicine.
Tom was joined in Holy Matrimony to his beloved wife, Margaret Ann Gordon, on July 16, 1954. Along with Margaret, he was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Sikeston for 58 years. He served his congregation as a junior high Sunday school teacher and in many other positions of service. In 2016, Tom and Margaret joined Grace Lutheran Church in Elgin, where Tom’s Christian faith was nourished by the Word of God preached and the Lord’s Supper distributed until his death.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Wayne Waltrip; his daughter, Elizabeth Ann Waltrip; and one infant grandson, August Vincent Waltrip.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret of Hutto; son, Perry Waltrip of Sikeston; son, John Waltrip and wife Sherry of Pflugerville; daughter, Nancy Waltrip of Hutto; granddaughters, Jessica (William) Turner, Amanda (Robert) Lee, Heather (Brian) McQueen; and grandsons, Matthew Waltrip and Andrew Waltrip.
Tom’s funeral will be held at Grace Lutheran Church, 801 W. 11th St., Elgin, TX 78621, on Saturday, Aug. 25 at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Carl D. Roth officiating. The family will receive visitors in the Grace Lutheran narthex prior to the funeral from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Refreshments will be served in the church parish hall after the service.
Serving as pallbearers for Tom’s funeral are Matthew Waltrip, Andrew Waltrip, Robert Lee, Brian McQueen, Will Turner and Mike Chegwidden.
He will then be taken back to Sikeston, where visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time for services at noon Tuesday, Aug. 28 at Concordia Lutheran Church in Sikeston with the Rev. Alan Wollenburg, pastor, officiating.
Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Blanchard Funeral Chapel.
Though we mourn because of Tom’s death, we take comfort from the truth that he was saved for everlasting resurrected life by God’s grace, through the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. To Him be glory forever!

Tom’s family has asked that memorials given in honor of him be directed to Concordia Lutheran Church in Sikeston.
