Title Offenders Donate for a Brighter Future

Amy Brown (High School Counselor – Charleston HS) and Ben Thatcher (Functional Leader – MoJob Center Sikeston) were present at Southeast Correctional Center in Charleston Friday to receive a check from Deputy Warden Bill Stange at the Southeast Correctional Facility in Charleston Missouri.

Branch 44-AA of the NAACP at Southeast Correctional Center was responsible for providing a generous donation which will make it possible for Charleston High School Seniors to take an important work readiness assessment at no cost to them or to the High School. By taking this assessment the students will have the opportunity to earn their National Career Readiness Certificate which can make it easier for them to get a job when they graduate.

This branch of the NAACP is comprised of a group of convicted offenders who are committed to bettering the local community and ensuring a brighter future for our youth. This group raises funds through fundraisers inside the institution and provides profits to programs that benefit the community. A spokesperson for the NAACP chapter expressed the meaning and purpose behind their decision to donate to this cause: “Although our members have been convicted of offenses against society, that is not who we are in our hearts. We are sons, brothers, and fathers. Our concerns for today and hopes for the future are the same as those of any free man. We would like to be of service in any way our situation allows to keep the streets safe and the children in a nurturing environment.”

Many Charleston High School Seniors will be taking the ACT WorkKeys assessment on 10/17/2018.
