MURRAY, Ky. — Joe William Gooch, formerly of Sikeston, Mo., age 73, passed away peacefully on Nov. 11, 2018, after an extended illness. He was at his home in Murray and surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Weslaco, Texas, on Aug. 18, 1945, to the late William Lloyd Gooch and Mable Thompson Gooch, who preceded him in death.

Joe is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joy Cauthorn Gooch; one son and daughter-in-law, Greg Gooch and Jennifer Gooch (Parmenter); two grandsons, Ty Gooch and Coleman Johnson; one brother, Jim Gooch; one nephew, Jamie Gooch, all from Sikeston; one niece, Stacie Gooch Michaelis of Seattle, Wash.; and one sister, Patricia McClellan of Flint, Mich. He also leaves behind his beloved pets Harley, Raphael and Susie Q.

He was a 1963 graduate of Sikeston High School and studied at Murray State University and Southeast Missouri University. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Sikeston. He was also a member of the Sikeston Jaycees, the Elks Club, the Bootheel Bass Club and a Boy Scout leader in Sikeston.

Upon retiring from a successful career in banking that extended for over 40 years, he opened his own hunting and fishing retail business, Southern Rod and Gun.

Joe was an avid fisherman who loved the outdoors. He went on many hunting trips including trips to Colorado with friends as well as deer, prairie dog and coyote hunting. He spent many years boating, camping and enjoying the outdoors.

Another hobby he was passionate about was drag boat racing, which he and his son, Greg, both competed in for over a decade.

Visitation will be held at Ponder Funeral Home in Sikeston on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2018, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Afterward, friends and family are invited to a reception at his son's home in Sikeston.
