Recycling Trailers are becoming an issue with City Council
Currently, the City of Portageville has a contract with the Pemiscot County Sheltered Workshop in Hayti with a Bootheel Recycling Grant that will end June 30, 2019.
What is happening, is when the recycling trailers are taken to the workshop, the workers have to go through the trailers and separate the items before they can be recycled. It is like folks are just using the dumpsters as their trash can.
After much discussion, the Council is considering not using this service since it is not being used properly. The trailers are taken to Hayti three-four times a month. That said, the City will continue to use the trailers through June 2019.
In this week’s newspaper, the City of Portageville has set forth proper instructions.
Please note the following instructions.
All recycling material must be loosely placed in the bins. Items are not allowed to be bagged, even if it is a plastic bag.
Acceptable materials include, but are not limited to:
Plastics #1 & #2, Paper, Aluminum Cans, Cardboard
Do NOT include Plastic Bags, Plastic Cups or Tubs, Styrofoam, Shredded Paper, Glossy Paper, Aerosol Cans, Aluminum Foil, Plastic Wrap, Plastic Toys, Hazardous Waste Materials, Anything with food contamination (used paper plates, paper towels, paper napkins, food boxes or containers).
Containers need to be rinsed to remove any residue. Plastic overwrap on soda bottles and water bottles is not recyclable and must be removed before placing it in the bins.
Plastic straws must be removed from cartons such as juice boxes. Boxboard boxes such as cereal and tissue boxes need to have plastic liners and plastic windows removed before being placed in bins.
The recycling trailers will be monitored until their contract is up at the end of June 2019.
They are contemplating not renewing this contract.
