CHARLESTON, Mo. — Robert Horace “Bob” Coon Sr., 85, died Jan. 6, 2019, at the Charleston Manor.
Born Dec. 16, 1933, at Charleston, to the late Edward Joseph Coon and Louise Isobel Stewart Coon, he had lived in Charleston his entire life where he was a graduate of St. Henry Catholic School. An active member of the St. Henry Catholic Church, he had served on the parish council, an usher, a Eucharistic Minister, on the finance committee, the school board, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus serving as a fourth-degree grand knight.
Having served in the Missouri National Guard, he attended college in St. Louis University and Hartford School of Insurance, he returned to Charleston to become a part of the family business, Coon Insurance Agency with his father, now a fifth generation family owned and operated insurance agency in Charleston.
Active in many community activities and always striving to help his hometown thrive and succeed, he had served on the Charleston Chamber of Commerce Board. In 1969, he was chairman of the community betterment committee, when the city took second place in the Missouri Community Betterment contest and had served on the industrial development committee. He was a member and past president of the Charleston Lions Club, the Charleston Country Club and the Southeast Missouri Association of Insurance Agents. Active in supporting and promoting the Boy Scouts of America, he served as the local fund drive leader and scout master. He was an avid golfer and loved to play cards. In 1971, he was honored as Charleston’s Man of the Year.
On June 8, 1953, he married Shirley Jean Collier, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are five sons, Robert Horace (Gail) Coon, Jr., John Charles Coon, Gary Joseph (Michelle) Coon, Thomas Stephen (Tammy) Coon, and Father David Noland Coon; one sister, Mary Coon Sanchez; his grandchildren, Cade (Laura Jane), Alana (Paul), Alicia (Nate), Jordan (Stephen), Katie (Chris) and Mitchell; great-grandchildren, Stewart, William, Mason, Ruby, Nora and Sylvia.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Edward James Coon and Richard David Coon; and one sister, Freda Coon Vied.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 11, 2019, at the St. Henry Catholic Church in Charleston. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m.
Interment will follow in the Calvary Cemetery near Charleston under the direction of the McMikle Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be his four sons, his grandson, Cade Coon, and his grandson-in-law, Paul Mills.
