CHESTERFIELD, Va. — Marjorie Laverne Spivey Hopkins, 91, died April 3, 2019, in Chesterfield.
Born July 30, 1927, in Sikeston, Mo., daugther of the late Elmes H. and Dona Martin Spivey, she attended went school in Sikeston, graduating in the class of 1945. She attended Draughton Business College in Paducah, Ky., and in later years she studied at St. Louis Community College and St. Louis University. In Sikeston, she worked at McKnight Keaton Grocery Company and Buchmueller, Whitworth and Foust architectural firm. She was employed as office manager for the City of Overland, Mo., and later was hired as manager of office services and assistant corporate secretary for Chemtech Industries in St. Louis. She came out of retirement in 1990 to serve as business manager for a church day care center in Phoenix, Ariz. She served as chairman of the Women’s Division of the Sikeston Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the National Secretaries Association, serving in various leadership positions. NSA became the Professional Secretaries International and in 1981 she was selected as “Secretary of the Year” of the Lindburgh Chapter in St. Louis. She was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy and served as an organizer and speaker at numerous women’s conference and retreats.
Her husbands, William Hopkins and George Knopp, preceded her in death.
She was also preceded in death by a sister.
Survivors include: one son, Michael Hopkins (Loretta) of Baltimore, Md.; three sisters; two brothers; and three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. May 4 at Harrowgate Worship Center in Chester.
