SIKESTON — Hot and very humid conditions are expected to continue throughout the area over the next several days.

Afternoon peak heat index values Wednesday will be well into the 100 to 105 degree range, from around 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., as highs reach into the lower to mid 90s with high humidity, according to the National Weather Service in Paducah, Ky. Isolated thunderstorms may provide temporary relief for some, the Weather Service said. Locally heavy rain and lightning are the primary storm hazards.

On Tuesday afternoon, the heat index reached triple digits in Southeast Missouri.

The Weather Service said thunderstorms are possible Wednesday through Thursday, with the best chance being during the heat of the day on Wednesday. While

locally heavy rainfall and lightning are the main storm hazards, an isolated strong storm is possible, especially Wednesday afternoon and evening.

Heat Index values may approach or exceed the 100-degree mark on Wednesday and Sunday, according to the Weather Service.

Individuals are urged to use caution in the heat. The American Red Cross said never leave pets or children alone in an enclosed vehicle; stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids even if not thirsty; wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing; and slow down, stay indoors and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day.
