SIKESTON — Police are investigating the death of a Poplar Bluff man who was found lying outside a business early Wednesday in Sikeston.

At 5:56 a.m. officers with Sikeston Department of Public Safety responded to Sikeston Electrical Supply, 105 Larcel Drive, in reference to an unresponsive 57-year-old man lying in the parking lot, according to Sikeston DPS Assistant Chief Jim Mcillen.

The man’s vehicle allegedly broken down, and he had been hanging around Love’s Travel Stop, 1401 S. Main St., between 9:30 p.m. Tuesday and 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, McMillen said.

“Workers at the truck stop asked the man to leave. They were not sure if he was having a medical problem and asked if he wanted an ambulance,” McMillen said.

Witnesses said the man walked across the street and fell, but he seemed to be OK. A couple hours later, someone found the unresponsive man in the parking lot and called 911. Emergency responders did CPR, but they were unable to revive him, McMillen said.

New Madrid County Coroner George DeLisle responded to the scene, and a toxicology report has been ordered.

“There doesn’t appear to be foul play, but police are looking into the matter,” McMillen said.
