SIKESTON — Merlin G. “Popo” Hagy, 77, passed away July 31, 2019, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

Born Aug. 10, 1941, in Crowder, son of the late George W. and Geneva Preston Hagy, he was a veteran of the United States Navy where he served during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He worked for KSIM radio for 13 years. He also worked for the Standard Democrat newspaper in Sikeston for 41 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Sikeston. Above all things, he loved his family.

On Oct. 21, 1963, in Sikeston, he married Joyce Turner, who survives of the home.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: one daughter and son-in-law, Shori and Buzz Ferrell of Sikeston; one grandchild and her husband, Jordi and Austin Newman of Sikeston; one great-grandchild, Flynn Newman of Sikeston; and one sister, Diane Hagy Lester of Riverside.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Donald Hagy, Bobby Hagy and Ricky Hagy.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of the funeral service at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2, 2019, at Nunnelee Funeral Chapel in Sikeston with Andy Bumpus officiating.

Interment will follow in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery at Bloomfield.

Pallbearers will be: Buzz Ferrell, Austin Newman, Mike Jensen, Don Culbertson, Dillion Murphy and Rick Schuerenberg.

Honorary pallbearers will be: Lloyd Stoner, Bill Ferrell, Bill Munger, Garland Hughes, Clif Crosno and Tom Hagy.
