SIKESTON — The Sikeston area was hit by strong storm system Saturday, but the area escaped with little more than just some spot flooding.
Heavy rainfall, flooding, damaging winds, and gusty non-thunderstorm winds impacted the region early Saturday morning. According to the National Weather Service, a bulk of the event occurred overnight and into the morning hours on Saturday. Rainfall totals ranged from 2 to 5 inches, which resulted in widespread areal flooding and flash flooding across the region.
Locally, about 2 a.m. a strong thunderstorm brought heavy rain and winds into Sikeston, dropping a large amount of water in a short period. During this time, some roadways were flooded but no damage was reported.
Damage was reported north of Sikeston in Cape and Jackson, where roads were flooded, trees were blown down and roof damage to buildings was also reported.
The Sikeston Power Station reported 2.86 inches fell in a 24-hour period. Charleston reported 2.31 inches while Dexter reported 2.62 inches.
More rain is expected Wednesday, with a 50 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms during the day and then a slight chance of rain and thunderstorms before 9 p.m. with wind gusts up to 18 miles per hour.
