Portageville mayor resigns; Berry appointed to fill position
PORTAGEVILLE, Mo. — Portageville’s mayor has resigned and an alderman has stepped up to fill the office.
During Tuesday’s city council meeting, the Portageville Board of Aldermen accepted the resignation of Mayor Floyd Simmons. Simmons, who submitted his letter of resignation earlier this month, cited health reasons for leaving office.
Vince Berry, who served as Ward 2 alderman and mayor pro tem, was appointed to serve as mayor. He will fill the unexpired term until April 2021.
In announcing the resignation, the board called Simmons a dedicated public servant.
“His leadership and service to the city has exemplified the community spirit that makes the city of Portageville such a special place. Mayor Simmons, his guidance and management will be missed at City Hall,” officials stated in the announcement.
Also during the meeting, the board set a public hearing for 5:30 p.m. March 2 at City Hall to consider amendments to zoning regulations to bring them into compliance with state statutes. The board will also discuss an application for funding from U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development to assist in providing a roof for the police department and equipment.
Those wishing more information about the public hearing can contact City Clerk Rachel Wrather by calling 573-379-5789.
