CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — A Memphis man has been sentenced to five years in prison after a traffic stop in Mississippi County.

According to a release from the United States Attorney’s Office, Demarcus M. Fleming, 26, was sentenced to 60 months imprisonment on a felony count of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. He appeared before US District Judge Ronnie L. White.

Court records show that on May 19, 2018, a Missouri State Highway Patrol officer initiated a traffic stop on Fleming for a traffic violation in Mississippi County.

The officer noticed the strong smell of raw marijuana coming from the car and then searched the car based on the odor.

Inside the trunk of the vehicle, the officer found a black suitcase that contained a mason jar containing about 145 grams of marijuana. The officer also found a loaded .40 caliber pistol in the same suitcase.
