SIKESTON — A Charleston woman was killed in an accident involving a Sikeston Department of Public Safety fire truck Wednesday afternoon.

According to Evelyn Aceves, Sikeston DPS public information officer, DPS Fire Division responded to a grass fire along Interstate 57 at the 2-mile marker.

While working to put out the fire, a DPS fire engine was blocking a lane to protect all personnel. The engine was struck in the rear by a vehicle traveling northbound on I-57.

Aceves said fire personnel immediately attended to the 85-year-old driver of the vehicle, Carolyn S. Burcks, and extricated her from the vehicle. She was then transported to the Missouri Delta Medical Center. She was later transported to Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau where, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, she was pronounced dead at 4:29 p.m.

Burcks is the fourth fatality in Troop E in 2020.
