NEW MADRID, Mo. — James Ras Jones, 89, passed away Oct. 5, 2020, at the New Madrid Living Center.
Born May 24, 1931, in Maynard, Arkansas, he was the son of the late Thomas James and Lora Mae Bemis Jones.
He was married to Barbara Seals Jones for 62 years; she preceded him in death on March 29, 2016.
He was a veteran of the Marine Corps and a Purple Heart recipient.
He had served the City of New Madrid as an alderman and police officer. He had been commander of the American Legion Post 595 in New Madrid, president of the Optimist Club, member of the Eagles Club in New Madrid and member of the VFW in Sikeston.
He owned Jones Grocery Store, owned and operated Hap’s Bar and The Claire Hotel, and he was a bail bondsman and farmer.
Survivors include: two daughters, Pam Hampton and Tonya and John Powell of New Madrid; his grandchildren, Amber and Kevin Dawson, Kasey and Brad Williams, Jonathan Ras and Alexis Powell, Steven Barbre and Chad Barbre; and great-grandchildren, Makyla, Malia, Alex, Hope, Ellamarie and Eliza Mae.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter, Patty Jones; two sisters, Marie Jones and Veonna Rogers; Roscoe Jones, Toot Jones and Dutter Jones.
Visitation is from 11 a.m. until service time at 2 p.m. Friday at Richards Funeral Home in New Madrid.
Burial will follow in the Mounds Park Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be: Jonathan Powell, Eddie Wayne Jones, Steven Barbre, James Jones, Johnny Jones and Hayden Dawson.
Honorary pallbearer will be Buck Hunter.
