What is the self defense law?

So could someone please tell me the law on self defense around here because my boyfriend was killed by someone else and he had no weapon on him. I just don’t believe its fair or legal that the man who killed him gets to walk the free world. He wasn’t just a junkie. He was someone's dad, son, boyfriend and friend. I just don’t think this was the right call. This man never even spent one day in jail. Someone please give me some answers.

According to Missouri law, deadly force may be used when a person reasonably believes that the level of force is necessary for self-defense or defense of other (including unborn children) in response to an imminent threat. Ultimately a prosecuting attorney makes the determination to prosecute or not.
