Depot receives grant to support fourth grade historical tour
SIKESTON — The Sikeston Depot Museum and Cultural Center has been awarded a grant to support its annual interactive program that teaches the town’s history to Sikeston fourth graders.
The Depot will receive a $2,350-grant fro the Missouri Humanities Council in support of the its project, “Fourth Grade Historical Interpretative Tour.”
Now in its fourth year, the program has been presented by the Depot as an outreach and enrichment to this community, according to Donna Brown, executive director of the Museum and Cultural Center.
This year’s school visits will be conducted on Sept. 14-16 and impact approximately 300 students and their teachers of both public and private schools currently in the Sikeston area.
“To make the study ‘come alive,’ enactors in period costumes will portray key people and events that helped settle the City of Sikeston as well as the surrounding area,” Brown said. “Materials were supplied to teachers and students to review before their visit.”
The Depot presents the educational program featuring the history of Sikeston in conjunction with the elementary division of the Sikeston public and private schools. The undertaking will coincide with the program of study about the history of the state of Missouri which is currently being studied in all elementary schools in Sikeston.
“We seek to offer an additional dimension to that study and give the students new insights into their own community,” Brown said. “The Sikeston Depot Museum and Cultural Center is home to interesting history and artifacts of our city and the region which will complement and expand the Missouri unit of study.”
The MHC is the only statewide agency in Missouri devoted exclusively to humanities education for citizens of all ages. It has served as a state affiliate of the national endowment for the Humanities since 1971.
