It’s back-to-school time across the county

It will be back to school for children throughout New Madrid County on Aug. 23. However, before the school bell signals the start of classes, most local schools are hosting open houses.

GIDEON, Mo. - The Gideon No. 37 School District will hold open house from 6-7 p.m. Thursday.

The open house will begin with a group meeting in the cafeteria. The meeting will include a discussion of Title I and Title V Federal Programs and the introduction of new teachers, as well as discussion of initiatives for the year.

Following the meeting, parents can meet with the teaching staff and visit the classrooms. Elementary class lists and student schedules for junior high and senior high school students will be available at this time.

Classes will begin for students at 8:15 a.m. Monday. The school day will run from 8:15 a.m. to 3:10 p.m.

NEW MADRID, Mo. - All students must pre-register for the new year prior to the first day of classes on Monday. Parents may do so by completing the forms found on the New Madrid County Central R-1 School District Website (nmceaglenation.com) under the parent tab by clicking student enrollment (www.nmceaglenation.com/online-enrollment-for-current-students/) or on the district’s app found by searching New Madrid R-1 in the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store. Once the app is downloaded click “Back to School” and follow the instructions.

Parents who need help with registration can call 573-688-2161 and follow the prompts to connect with their child’s school office.

New Madrid County Central High School’s open house is set for 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the high school.

During this time students will receive copies of their schedules, lockers (if they would like one), and will receive their Chromebooks.

Orientation for incoming ninth grade students is from 6-7 p.m. Thursday in the NMCC High School Auditorium. This will include a discussion of the new year. Tours of the building for the freshman class will be provided by members of the Student Council and the Beta Club.

All high school students will have the opportunity to have pictures taken by Cheekwood Studios between 5-8 p.m. Thursday.

Open houses for parents of students attending Lilbourn, Matthews and New Madrid elementary schools will be from 3:30-6 p.m. Aug. 26.

At this time, parents are encouraged to come meet their child’s teacher and check out all the changes and updates which went on this summer at their child’s school.

While the first day of school for students in kindergarten through 12th grade is Monday, the pre-school program at each of the district’s elementary schools begins Aug. 25.

PORTAGEVILLE, Mo. - The open house for the Portageville Elementary School is set for 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday.

During the open house, parents and students can meet the teachers and receive information about the coming year.

In the school cafeteria car riders will be able to sign up for iDismiss and receive car tags, bus riders will receive information about their routes, backpacks and supplies will be available for those who need them from the BETA Club, sign-up will be available for the youth soccer program and parents will receive information about the Parents as Teachers Program and Title I services.

All forms must be returned on the first day of school on Monday.

RISCO, Mo. - The Risco School District has set open house from 6-7 p.m. Thursday.

The first day of school is Monday.
