HAYTI, Mo. — A death of a Hayti man is being investigated after the resident died after an altercation with police officers.
According to a statement from Hayti Police Chief Shane Wiseman, the incident occurred Sept. 25 at approximately 3 p.m. when officers responded to 1009 N. Oates Streets for a medical assist call for a 35-year-old male with an altered mental status.
While officers were on scene, the subject became combative with them and one of the officers had to deploy his taser.
“The taser was ineffective and the subject continued to resist and fight with the officers,” Wiseman said.
The officers were eventually able to disarm the subject of the glass and managed to place him in wrist restraints. When in wrist restraints the officer noticed that the subject was having trouble breathing and alerted the medics.
The subject was then transported to the Pemiscot Count Memorial ER and was later pronounced dead.
One of the officers was treated for minor lacerations and released.
“At that time I requested the assistance of the Missouri Highway Patrol Division of Drug and Crime Control in the investigation,” Wiseman said. “After review of the available information, I have determined at this time that the officers acted within the Hayti Police Department Use of Force policy. The City of Hayti are saddened at the loss of one of our citizens and our condolences go out to his family.”
The man who died has been identified as 35-year-old DeMarcus Williams.
