NMC sheriff's department looking for fleeing felon

NEW MADRID, Mo. — The public’s help is sought in locating a felon who fled from custody Friday afternoon.

At 4:45 p.m. Friday, George Jones escaped custody from the New Madrid County Sheriff’s Department while turning himself in after being on furlough, the Department reported in a news release. Jones, whose charges include possession of a controlled substance, burglary, property damage, stealing, and stealing a motor vehicle, was last seen in the area of the New Madrid County Sheriff’s Department going toward Main Street.

At that time he was wearing a green jacket, black sweatpants and white tennis shoes. He had handcuffs and a leather belt restraint still on when he fled from officers.

The Sheriff’s Department asks that the public not attempt to approach or apprehend Jones. If someone knows his whereabouts or sees him, they should contact the New Madrid County Sheriff’s Department at 573-748-2516 or Communications at 573-748-5226.
