Colin Powell wasn’t a Republican. He was a left-wing Democrat.

Powell was actually a registered independent from his earliest years as a combat infantryman in Vietnam to his retirement from the armed forces. During his life, he supported members of both parties and served as Secretary of State under a Republican President.
