Filing ends for April elections in New Madrid County

NEW MADRID, Mo. - With the closing of filing on Dec. 28, the slates are set for the April 5 election to school boards and city governments in New Madrid County.

CITY OFFICES

Howardville will elect a mayor and aldermen from Wards 1 and 2 to four-year terms. Mayor Jessie Newsom Jr. has filed for re-election also filing were Jimmy Daniel to serve as Ward 1 alderman and in Ward 2 incumbent Doug Haney.

There is a three-way race for Lilbourn’s city collector, Amanda Lawrence and Wendy Henry have filed against current collector Virgie Johnson for the office.

There are races as well for the other three openings to filled at Lilbourn. Robert Taylor and Danny Sprouse will vie for the office of mayor while in Ward 1 incumbent Terry L. Hawkins is opposed by Larry Long and in Ward 2 incumbent alderman Larry Joe Hamilton is facing a challenge from Benji Henry.

Voters in Matthews will elect two aldermen-at-large, however,Travis Russom is the only candidate filed.

With an opening for Morehouse’s city marshal, three candidates’ have placed their names on the ballot. Seeking the two-year term are Jimmy Fowler Jr., Brianna Madigan and Curtis Burnett.

Seeking a two-year term as Morehouse Ward 2 alderman are Randy Dill and Susan Majors. Patti McCree has filed for a one-year unexpired term as Morehouse city collector; incumbent Darren Dial is seeking a two-year term to again represent the voters in Ward 1 and Derrick Warren has filed for a one-year unexpired term.

With New Madrid Mayor Dick Bodi not seeking another term, a race has formed to take his place. Candidates are current alderman Nick White and former mayor Donald Brown. Others seeking office are unopposed and are incumbent Joey Higgerson for city marshal; Tommy Chism, who currently serves as Ward 1 alderman; Jimmy McSpadden for the Ward 2 seat presently held by Anthony Young; and incumbent Ryan Riley in Ward 3.

Portageville voters will fill two two-year terms as alderman from Wards 1 and 2 and a four-year term for municipal judge. Gary Faulk and Patty Johnson have filed to serve for the Ward 1 alderman post currently filled by Denis McCrate while Michael T. Johnson and Shirley Estes are seeking election in Ward 2. Current municipal judge Christopher Stinnett is unopposed in his election bid.

None of the incumbents will face challengers in April in Risco. Sheila Halford is seek another term as the West Ward representative on the Board of Aldermen and Charles “Burt” Todd as the East Ward alderman. Paul Hayes has filed for re-election as the town’s mayor

SCHOOL BOARDS

Larry Wiggs and Vicky Raymond have filed for re-election to the Gideon School District’s school board and will be unopposed in April

The incumbents have also filed for the New Madrid County R-1 School Board. Unopposed are Ryan Eddy and Jenny Cope.

Micah Rone and Michael Prince filed for re-election to the Portageville Board of Education as well and do not face opponents.

On the Risco School Board, incumbents Daniel Presley and Jeff White are unopposed in seeking three-year terms.

Because there are the equal number of candidates to open terms, an election will not be needed in April in the four school districts.
