Malcolm Lee

RIO RANCHO, N.M. — Wade “Malcolm” Lee, age 74, of Rio Rancho passed away on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2022, at Suites of Rio Vistas in Rio Rancho. He was born on June 27, 1947, in Sikeston, Missouri, to the late Norman Lee and Mary McAfee.

Malcolm grew up in Sikeston, surrounded by his parents, four siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. It was obvious early on that Malcolm was gifted with the ability to sing and entertain people with his outgoing and witty personality. He had many friends growing up and was in touch with many of them over the years and always loved coming home to attend the high school reunions and stayed very close to his lifelong best friend, Russ Felker. Most people in Sikeston will remember Malcolm from being in the local blue grass band, “The Travelers.” Also in the band was Terry Burke, Russ Felker, Patti McMullin and Sue Foster. They had quite the following as they won numerous singing contests locally and regionally. Malcolm was a staple on KSIM as that is where he got his start in broadcasting, it was obvious he was a natural on the air and he was going places and boy did he go places! Malcolm also attended Southeast Missouri State and served in the US Army Reserve.

In 1968 he started at KTTS in Springfield, Missouri. In 1969 the program director of WQAM from Miami, FL. was in Springfield and heard him on the air, he called Malcolm and offered him the coveted 3-6 drive time slot. Within months, Malcolm was No. 1 in Miami and his new air name was “Scott Scooter Sherwood” needless to say he was off to the races!

From Miami he went to KXOK in St. Louis where he was the 3-6 drive time DJ and Program Director. He was also Program Director and DJ in top markets such as, Milwaukee WRIT, Minneapolis/ST. Paul WDGY, Jacksonville WIVY, Kansas City and Detroit. His biggest success was in Orlando WOCL where he was Program Director and the drive time “Scott Scooter Sherwood morning show” for 10 years and No. 1 for most those years.

In 2002 Malcolm decided to head west to Albuquerque, New Mexico, and was Program Director and morning show DJ at KABG. The last few years Malcolm was semi-retired working for Dreamstyle Remodeling in Albuquerque, enjoying himself, playing golf and hitting the casinos with his partner, Cathy. He had many friends from his Dreamstyle family and were there for him with prayers and support over the last 11 months.

Malcolm will be missed by all; he was a loving father, partner, big brother, uncle and friend to many, we love you and miss you RIP.

Survivors include: two brothers, Jim and Carie McAfee of Plano, Texas, and Charles and Cindy Riddle of Springfield, Missouri; two sisters, Carolyn and Blane Nagel of St. Charles, Missouri, and Frannie and Steve Ferrell of Sikeston; partner, Cathy Eden of Rio Rancho.
