DPS Chief has right approach

Residents of Sikeston — take heed. We are privileged to have a director in charge of Sikeston DPS who we all can be proud of. He is a man of integrity, a Christian, who conducts himself in a way that if you spend any time around him, you will discover that he not only talks the talk but walks the walk. He is a good communicator and true professional in dealings with the public. He is a refreshing breath of fresh air and his approach to community policing is something that has been needed here for years. I am sure that when he became director of Public Safety, many of his ideas on community policing were not immediately accepted by some in our community, nor by some of the officers who have moved on to other communities where they could continue their “hard nosed” tactics. I am sure that accounts for most, if not all, of the staffing shortages in DPS today. As I write this, there is a community meeting of leaders, pastors and others scheduled by the chief. Hopefully we can hear what he has to say, and together, strategize ways that we can come together to tackle these problems we are now facing. The chief has the right approach — together, respectfully, we can all benefit.

Commodity prices are win/lose for area

Commodity prices are sky high. Commodity aluminum and agricultural prices are sky high. This is a win for the Magnitude Seven aluminum plant in New Madrid and our local farmers. The only problem is that the higher commodity prices also mean higher prices for consumers, like you and me.

GOP killing mail delivery

The time to mail and receive mail still seems to be getting longer and longer. Maybe the GOP has finally been successful at slowing down mail delivery to support Trump’s lies about mail fraud voting.

Wanting case update

I was wondering when the Standard Democrat was going to give us another update on the status of the Sikeston DPS captain who had a wreck and killed a girl over by the kindergarten. We still haven’t heard anything.

Not much to update. It is still in the court system with a jury trial scheduled for July 27-29 in Butler County on a change of venue.

Tired of gun violence

In response to the front page of the Friday, March 4 paper, meeting discussing gun violence, once again, there is no such thing as gun violence. They are people with guns creating violence.

C’mon Sikeston

We need build up and make Sikeston better so people stop going to Cape and Poplar Bluff to eat. Good ole fried chicken like KFC or Popeyes. I’m not knocking Jays, they are outstanding really, but Sikeston needs another legitimate fried chicken place in town. A franchise or whatever. And a breakfast place like Ihop or Dennies or Huddle House. The leadership needs to get together and make this happen because Sikeston is basically going down. A perfect spot for KFC would be the old Zaxby’s. We’ve got plenty of spots to put it other places.

Republicans need someone better than Trump

I am no fan of Joe Biden. I did not vote for him in the last election. But we must remember these two facts. In the fall of 2008 gas was $4.89 in Sikeston. Also when Putin invades Ukraine, it was Donald Trump who praised him for being a genius. Surely the Republican Party can find somebody else better to lead them.

Pick up the trash

When is Scott County going to start picking up trash as well as sidewalks?

Just good news, not bad

Is there any way you could put in the paper good news and leave out the bad?

We would love to not have any bad news to put in the paper but unfortunately that isn’t the case. We try to be balanced and inform on both the good and bad things going on in the community.

Dirty diaper vigilantes

We all have seen disposable diapers tossed on parking lots or even out the window on highways. This is disgusting! Nasty! Extremely unsanitary! Think of stepping on one getting out of your vehicle. A group of us have decided to be watchful when we are shopping for those who don’t have the mindset to put a disposable diapers in a plastic bag which are plentiful and free. Trash cans are all around. When we see this individual tossing diapers, or any trash, on any parking lot, we will take a picture of your car and license plates and send to local police stations. A law was posted by First Lady Johnson (Keeping America Clean) and a fine of $500 will be issued for littering. Imagine getting this fine for your stupidity.

Johnson’s closed?

Is Johnson’s Food Mart closed in Matthews? I called today and the phone service said the number was not in service.

Yes, Johnson’s Food Mart is closed.
